After three decades of dedicated service, Mike Bannwarth is embarking on a well-deserved retirement, leaving behind an incredible legacy at the Diocese of Sioux Falls and the Catholic Community Foundation for Eastern South Dakota (CCFESD). We asked Mike to share insights about his journey, the people who influenced him, and his hopes for the future.

How did your career a the Diocese, and eventually the CCFESD, begin?
“I had previously worked at Western Bank, which was doing business with the Diocese. Bishop Robert Carlson and I knew each other from that experience,” Mike explained. That connection would eventually lead him to join the Diocese as Director of Finance, where he began a career filled with purpose and faith.

What roles have you held in your 30 years?
“I first served as the Director of Finance (Finance Officer) of the Diocese of Sioux Falls, then transitioned over to the Catholic Community Foundation in 2020, as it had grown to the point of needing its own CFO. Both were very fulfilling roles, but very different,” Mike said, reflecting on his career evolution.

Any highlights from your time you’d like to share?
Mike emphasized the privilege of working with three bishops during his tenure. “I was honored to work with Bishop Robert Carlson, Bishop Paul Swain, and Bishop Donald DeGrood—each offering their own unique gifts,” he shared. He also expressed gratitude for the opportunity to integrate his faith into his work, saying, “I always enjoyed being able to combine work—accounting and finance—and faith in my work experience.”

Among his favorite projects, Mike highlighted his involvement with the Journey to Holiness and other diocesan initiatives, as well as projects like the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House and the Adoration Sisters Monastery. “Those were especially meaningful to me because they combined mission with service in ways that really made a difference,” he said.

Are there any particular people you’d like to thank?
“In addition to the bishops, I want to thank Mark Conzemius and Tony Menke for giving me the opportunity to be part of the CCFESD team. It’s been a great experience,” Mike said. He also expressed deep gratitude to his wife, Mary Kay, saying, “She has been a part of the many experiences along the way and very supportive. This journey has been ours together.”

Mike also acknowledged the late Jim McAdarah, a mentor who guided him early in his career. “Jim was a wonderful role model and instrumental in guiding me toward this path,” he noted.

As you join the CCFESD Board of Directors, what are your hopes for the future of the Foundation?
“I look forward to providing insight from the perspective of a former employee to help shape the future of the Foundation. It will be an honor to serve alongside board members I have admired over the years,” Mike said.

What are you looking forward to most in retirement?
Mike is embracing this new chapter with openness and faith. “I am looking forward to being open to where God is calling me in this next chapter,” he said. “In addition, I’m excited to enjoy free time to travel with my wife, Mary Kay, spend more time with family, and continue serving the church and community.”

“Thanks for the opportunity to serve in this capacity!” Mike concluded, his humility and gratitude evident.

On December 18, Mike was honored with a special retirement celebration surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues. Stories of his leadership, mentorship, and kindness filled the room, accompanied by laughter and fond memories shared by those whose lives he impacted.

As Mike steps into retirement, his faith-filled approach and legacy of service leave a lasting impact. We thank him for his remarkable contributions and wish him abundant blessings in this exciting new chapter. Congratulations, Mike, on a well-earned retirement!
