Pheasants, Faith, and Fundraising
Attendees of this year’s Bishop’s Charity Hunt were treated to two days filled with South Dakota’s best— pheasant hunting, beautiful weather, and the joy of coming together in fellowship. Friends, new and old, shared the fields and the table, enjoying the camaraderie that has become a hallmark of this beloved annual tradition.
Highlights of the event included generous hospitality from Horseshoe K Ranch, a lively auction, and Mass celebrated by Bishop Donald DeGrood and many attending clergy. This year’s Bishop’s Charity Hunt was held in memory of long-time participant and friend, Wayne Puetz, who passed away in January. Wayne’s wife, Mary, along with their children and the leadership of Puetz Design & Build, joined us for the program to be honored on his behalf. Wayne’s legacy of faith, generosity, and love for the outdoors lives on through this special tradition.
These moments of prayer and celebration reminded everyone that the true purpose of the hunt goes beyond the field: supporting Newman Catholic Campus Ministry, which forms young leaders in faith and service across the Diocese of Sioux Falls. We were grateful to host guests from these campus ministries, including Northern State University in Aberdeen, Dakota State University in Madison, South Dakota State University in Brookings, University of South Dakota in Vermillion, St. Patrick Newman Club in Sioux Falls, and Semper College Ministry in Mitchell. These ministries are vital to guiding students through their formative years, building a strong foundation of faith during a pivotal stage of life.
The Bishop’s Charity Hunt is more than just a hunting trip—it is a community gathering rooted in faith, generosity, and shared mission. We are grateful to our hosts, sponsors, participants, and donors who made this year’s event such a success. Together, you made a difference in the lives of countless students, ensuring the Church continues to flourish with faithful leaders for generations to come.
We look forward to seeing you in the field again next year!
